The first election to Luton Borough Council occurred on the 18th May 1876. At the Annual meeting of the Council on the 27th May, six Alderman were elected, all sitting councillors. On the 6th June a by-election was held electing six replacements for the new Alderman. On the 1st November, the first of the annual elections, a third each time, was held.
