Acton MB came into existence in 1921. Acton was a Local Board from 1865-1894, and an Urban District from 1894-1921. The Acton UD thread contained some election addresses from the 1940s that I posted there because of the absence, until very recently, of this thread. I have copied them over to this thread and deleted the originals.

I have in my collection of literature two election addresses from Acton's 1946 election in the borough's South-West ward. First, the Communist candidates Maida Beasley and George Poole. Poole seems to have had a cosy relationship with the Labour Party, or so he makes out. The Ted Bramley who provided the message on page 4 of the address was London County Councillor for the Mile End division, and therefore of some importance in the London area for the Communist Party. Pages 1 and 2 of the address are shown in this post, pages 3 and 4 in the subsequent post due to the limits to the number of attachments. Added in edit: I am grateful to David J. Glanfield for reminding the result could be found in the Elections Centre website. The figures in South-West ward, which must have been a straight Labour - Communist fight, were: H. Lane (Lab) 1,560 L.A. Fermor (Lab) 1,510 G. Poole (Com) 443 Mrs. M. Beasley (Com) 374 Attachments:

Here is the Labour candidates' election address for the same election. The first image is the front page of the address, the second image is the 'inside pages' spread, and the third image is of page 4 of the address.

Acton 1922
Source: Acton Gazette and Express, 3 November 1922.
There were casual vacancies in two wards: these were filled by separate elections. Although an unusual approach this is not unknown: in recent years Reading council has been known to adopt the same method.
North-East ward (2,308 voting = 33.3% t'out)
J.W. Latham (AW) 1,765 W. Lean (AW) 1,744 A.R. Northcott (Lab) 510 W. Brown (Lab) 500
Note: G. Pike (Ind Lab) was nominated for this ward but withdrew his papers in the allowable period.
North-West ward
R.W. Birkett (AW) Unopp. Miss H.E.L. Mountford (AW) Unopp.
Casual vacancy: H.C. Geare (AW) Unopp.
South-East ward (2,369 voting = 29% t'out)
F. Sharpin (AW) 1,602 R.T. Mence (AW) 1,597 H.M. Piesse (Lab) 573 P. Margetts (Lab) 546 G. Pike (Ind Dem) 227
South-West ward (1,547 voting = 19.1% t'out)

Acton 1924
Source: Acton Gazette and Express, 7 November 1924. AWCA = Acton Women Citizen's Association NCU = National Citizen's Union There were two vacancies in each ward
The number of electors quoted for each ward are significantly higher than those quoted below for the 1925 election: the suspicion is that the electorates for 1924 represent the total number of Register entries rather than the local government electorate (always a lower figure prior to changes to the franchise introduced in 1945). This was confirmed by a study of the Autumn 1924 Register, shown at the bottom of the post.
North-East ward (8,977 electors; 2,355 voted = 26.2% t'out)
J.J. Wade (C) 1,746 J.B. Craig (C) illegible C. O'Day (Lab) 581 C.W. Beckett (Lab) 546
North-West ward (7,006 electors; 2,229 voted = 31.8% t'out)
B. Armitage (C) 1,524 H. Holmes (C) 1,442 Alice M.J. Graham (AWCA) 718 Alice M. Arney (Lab) 210 F.R. Jones (Lab) 188
South-East ward (7,818 electors; 2,555 voted = 32.7% t'out)
Gertrude Barnes (C) 1,956 A.G. Keen (C) 1,902 A.R. Northcott (Lab) 567 M. Ryan (Lab) 540
South-West ward (8,231 electors; 2,251 voted = 27.3% t'out)
R. Spencer (Lab) 815 F.J. Matterface (Ind) 810 J.A. Welch (Lab) 758 J. Purcell (NCU) 718 H.T. Mercer (NCU) 671 A. Forrester (Dem Lab) 159 Annie Slack (Dem Lab) 71
Note: Matterface received support from members of the local Anglican Church. Note: At the 1924 General Election a Miss M.R. Richardson contested the Acton division, being the nominee of the Acton Democratic Labour Party. According to F.W.S. Craig: "[The Party] was formed in May 1924 by a number of former Labour Party members who had resigned the previous year due to a split in the local Labour Party. The policy of the Democratic Labour Party was left-wing and [Miss Richardson] received Communist Party support."
By-Elections
Source: Acton Gazette and Express, 28 November 1924
In North-East ward, held 26 November, following the election of Cllr. R.T. Mence as an Alderman:
C.E. Street (C) 1,265 C. O'Day (Lab) 489
majority 776 (The paper reports that 1,755 voted, indicating that there was 1 spoilt ballot paper)
In South-East ward, held 26 November, following the election of Cllr. J. Snelling as an Alderman:
C.A. McLachlan (C) 906 A.R. Northcott (Lab) 358
majority 548 (The paper reports that 1,265 voted, again indicating that there was 1 spoilt ballot paper)
Autumn 1924 Register of Electors: Acton Borough
Source: AncestryLibrary.com
North-East ward Polling District A = 1,465 total entries Polling District B = 916 " " Polling District C = 2,704 " " Polling District J = 3,892 " " TOTAL = 8,977
North-West ward Polling District D = 501 total entries Polling District E = 6,505 " " TOTAL = 7,006
South-East ward Polling District H = 3,625 total entries Polling District I = 3,524 " " Polling District K = 669 " " TOTAL = 7,818
South-West ward Polling District F = 5,697 total entries Polling District G = 2,534 " " TOTAL = 8,231
Thus it confirms that the newspaper's quoted electorates are incorrect. A full examination of the Register to determine the local government electorates lies outside the scope of the current study.

Acton 1927Source: Acton Gazette and Express, 4 November 1927 For the ordinary election there were two vacancies in each ward. There were casual vacancies in two wards which were filled (like in 1922) by separate election. This arrangement appeared to cause considerable confusion, the local paper thundered in its headline: MIDNIGHT DECLARATION - Labour Gains Two Seats - 401 UNMARKED AND 134 SPOILT PAPERS - IGNORANCE OR STUPIDITY? At this election all the Conservative candidates had the support of the NCU.
North-East ward (3,065 polled (including 5 spoilt papers) = 36.5% t'out)
R.H. Hutchinson (C) 1,993 F.J. Matterface (C) 1,897 H. Holsgrove (Lab) 1,017 F. Havill (Lab) 978
North-West ward (2,698 ballot papers = 40% t'out)
R.G. Crust (C) 1,843 H. Holmes (C) 1,838 G.B. Atkinson (Lab) 453 Mrs. F.E. Mepham (Lab) 418
Note: H.H. Tucker (Ind) was nominated for this election, but withdrew his papers so as to fight the casual vacancy only. Note: There were 295 unmarked ballot papers and a further 15 spoilt ballot papers.
Casual vacancy: J.S. McNish (C) 1,422 H.H. Tucker (Ind) 898 Mrs. E. Brain (Lab) 325
Note: There were 2,692 ballot papers at this election. There were 35 unmarked papers, 40 marked for more than one candidate, and 1 initialled by the voter.

C.W. Chandler (C) 1,112 A.G. Keen (C) 1,110 T.S. Atkins (Lab) 862 M. Ryan (Lab) 808
South-West ward (1,593 polled (including 10 spoilt papers) = 21.1% t'out)
J.A. Welch (Lab) 1,054 W. McLaine (Lab) 1,015 Mrs. R. Collier (C) 503 Mrs. E. Forrester (Ind) 501
Note: Both Mrs. Collier and Mrs. Forrester were shown as NCU candidates in the Acton Gazette and Express of 28 October 1927, in a story containing details of the nominations; the above designations were as in the edition of 4 November. Mrs. Forrester had been a Labour councillor for the ward 1922-5 and at the time of the election was a Labour member for Acton on the Brentford Board of Guardians.
Casual vacancy: E. Brickley (Lab) 970 Mrs. R. Collier (C) 528
