The Hendon Urban District Becomes a Municipal Borough - A Pictorial Record of Charter Day - 26 September 1932 www.londonsscreenarchives.org.uk/title/9/The first elections to the new borough council took place on Tuesday 1 November 1932. Of the old urban district council, nine members did not contest the borough elections due to a "gentlemen's agreement", where there was the expectation of election to the aldermanic bench. The 'arrangement' met with much local disapproval, including from the local newspaper ( The Hendon Times and Guardian). The nine (two of them Labour and seven 'anti-Socialist') were: S.H. Egan, W.M. Maughan, H. Connell, W.H.N. Shakespeare, W. Taylor, A.J. Reynolds, C.C. Cartwright, C. Latham and Mrs. Bannister. Latham was perhaps the most famous of them, a prominent Labour politician and leader of the LCC from 1940-47. On joining the House of Lords in 1942 he became Baron Latham of Hendon in the County of Middlesex. Three councillors were elected from each of the nine wards, the results gave 21 anti-Socialist and 6 Labour councillors. After the aldermanic election a council composition of 28 anti-Socialists of various hues, and 8 Labour, was expected. In the results that follow in the next post, 1) I have not been able to discover the exact 'flavour' of the anti-Socialist candidates in Child's Hill 2) An asterisk (*) after the name of a candidate indicates a former member of the UDC 3) The local paper admitted that the electorates assigned to each ward were estimates.
