A few weeks ago I was able to purchase on ebay, for a song, Rotherham's volume of council minutes for May to October 1925 - see picture below. From it we can glean the following about the council in the 1924-25 municipal year: The Mayor: Ald. Aizlewood. (Aizlewood had also been Mayor during 1923-24 but felt unable to continue for a third year. Cllr. Dewar became Mayor for 1925-26.) Other Aldermen: Bingham, Caine, Clarke, Coward, Gummer, Twigg, D.L. Winter, Wormald. Councillors: Bardsley, Barlow, Bown, Brooke, J. Clarke, W.J. Clark, Cruikshanks, Davy, Dewar, Dickinson, Ellis, Fowler, Furniss, Green, A.R. Habershon, Hall, Harper, Harrop, Hutchinson, Kirk, Mrs. MacLagan, Mitchell, Orrell, Potter, Ramsden, Smalley, Woffenden. So, at this time the council had 36 members: 27 councillors and 9 aldermen. There was only 1 female member of the council. Ald. Winter died 5 July 1925. He had served continuously as a councillor or aldermen since 1887, and was Mayor during the year 1901-2. Cllr. Habershon was elected to the aldermanic bench to replace him on 7 October 1925. There was a by-election in North ward on 21 October 1925 to fill the vacancy caused by Habershon's elevation. This would have taken place only a couple of weeks before 1925's triennial election. According to the Sheffield Daily Telegraph of 22 October 1925, the result was: E.J. Jenkins (Mun) 1,132 (57.6%) G. Chapman (Lab) 833 (42.4%) Majority: 299 (15.2%). Electorate: 3,114. Turnout: 63.1% The wards of the borough would appear to have been: East, St. Ann's, Clifton, South, West, North, Thornhill, Masbrough, Kimberworth. Attachments:
