Elections in Kingsbury to the Middlesex County CouncilIt will no doubt have been noticed that I have conducted and reported on the forum my research with regard to
Kingsbury Urban District. In this post I will record what is known of elections from Kingsbury to the Middlesex County Council. (ED = electoral division.)
From 1889 At the establishment of the Middlesex County Council, Kingsbury parish formed a part of the
Pinner ED. Results for these elections can be found on my website:
www.harrow-elections.co.uk/1894-1933/appendices/ and click on Appendix J.
From 1904 Kingsbury was included in
Wembley ED. At this time the ED included Kingsbury, Wembley and Wealdstone urban districts. Because of the presence of Wealdstone, results for elections up to, but not including, 1922 are to be found in the same Appendix J.
From 1922 Appendix J no longer includes results for
Wembley ED because Wealdstone had been removed to form its own ED. Wembley ED therefore consisted of just Wembley and Kingsbury UDs. The following is the sparse information that I have found:
1922 Horace Dive became the councillor for the division. It is not known whether this was an unopposed return or not ..... a brief note in the
Hendon and Finchley Times speculated that a Mrs. Silvester (wife of the vicar of Wembley) might be nominated.
1925 Dive retired at this election and was replaced by Richard H. Powis. There was an election, but party affiliations (if any), the electorate and the turnout have not yet been established.
Richard H. Powis 2,048
M.R. Harley 882
maj. 1,166
1928 Powis continued as councillor for the ED. No further information currently available.
2 March 1931 Powis was again returned for the ED named
Wembley. The press noted that he was a building contractor by profession. Whether there was a contest is unknown, and whether the electors in the new
Kingsbury ED division were allowed to participate is moot.
27 April 1931 The election to a new
Kingsbury ED takes place. The division consisted of Kingsbury UD together with the Kenton and Park wards of Wembley UD. (Clearly the Wembley ED now became Wembley UD alone less the Kenton and Park wards.) The press reported that the electorate of the Kingsbury ED was "just over 14,000" with Kingsbury providing 5,944 of them. Given the following voting figures at the election, turnout was approximately 16%.
John H. Lambert (Ind) 1,050
Walter J. Thomas (Ind) 894
Frederick C. Woods (Lab) 313
maj. 156
1934 Lambert retired at this election. Again a contest occurred; according to the
Hendon and Finchley Times the electorate was 22,127. 2,447 people cast valid votes to give a turnout of 11.1%.
Ronald M.J. Pendred (MR) 1,255
Albert E. Mason (RA) 1,192
maj. 63
1937 By this election Kingsbury UD was no more. There was a general review of division boundaries throughout Middlesex which came into force at this election. Pendred was elected to the new
Wembley North-West ED; Powis was returned for the new
Wembley South-West ED. [Source:
