Willesden UDC 1913 - Part 1
Whilst browsing the 1913 election results in the Willesden Chronicle (courtesy of the British Newspaper Archive), I noticed that the paper printed an analysis of the voting (information supplied by the Returning Officer).
This could therefore allow the presentation of the RO's analysis in the style developed by F.W.S. Craig for multi-member Westminster constituencies, as in his British Parliamentary Election Results 1918-1949, revised edition, page 685 ff.
I've tried this out for the result in one ward so far, Church End, and attach my effort in the next post.

Willesden UDC 1913 - Part 2Further to the above post.... I have moved the Excel file to this post. Details of the unopposed returms in Brondesbury Park, Mid Kilburn and North Kilburn wards have been added, as has the next analysis for South Kilburn ward. The analysis was interesting as it was a tight contest between the Labour (Socialist) candidates and the Municipal Reformers. The ballot paper "audit" works well but nevertheless frustrating minor discrepancies appear. There could be a number of reasons for this, in particular misprints by the local paper and mis-readings of the (underexposed) pages of the Willesden Chronicle on the British Newspaper Archive site. Additionally, despite every care, I may have made a mistake with some of the spreadsheet formulas. South Kilburn featured 7 candidates for the three seats and thereby lies another issue with the ballot paper analysis. Church End with 4 candidates had a limited number of vote combinations possible. South Kilburn with 7 lies at the very limits of practical analysis as the following table shows. Number of candidates | Possible combinations with 1 vote (plumpers)
| Possible combinations with 2 votes
| Possible combinations with 3 votes
| Total combinations | 4 | 4 | 6 | 4 | 14 | 5 | 5 | 10 | 10 | 25 | 6 | 6 | 15 | 20 | 41 | 7 | 7 | 21 | 35 | 63 | 8 | 8 | 28 | 56 | 92 | 9 | 9 | 36 | 84 | 129 |
For 8 or 9 candidates it looks to be only practicable to report the number of plumpers and the "block" vote figures! Attachments:Willesden 1913.xlsx (20.01 KB)
