As usual, there were two routine vacancies in each ward. A casual vacancy in North-East ward was filled by a separate election at the same time; this resulted, for the second year running, in an unusually high number of blank and spoilt ballot papers. (In 1927 the spoilt papers problems were in the North-West and South-West wards.)
North-East ward (8,661 electors; 3,157 ballot papers (including 82 spoilt papers) = 36.5% t'out)
R. Yarwood (C) 1,836 W. Palmer (C) 1,809 H. Holsgrove (Lab) 1,190 J.C. Day (Lab) 1,155
Casual vacancy, caused by the resignation of Cllr. R.H. Hutchinson H.C. Matthews (C) 1,802 Mrs. F. Carlsson (Lab) 1,121
Note: There were 3,156 ballot papers of which 222 were blank or otherwise spoilt.
North-West ward (6,683 electors; 2,016 ballot papers (including 3 spoilt papers) = 30.2% t'out)
R.W. Birkett (C) 1,466 H.T. Mercer (C) 1,460 S.W. Hobbs (Lab) 518 Mrs. F.E. Mepham (Lab) 515
South-East ward (7,012 electors; 2,254 ballot papers (including 4 spoilt papers) = 32.1% t'out)

South-West ward (7,527 electors; 1,793 ballot papers (including 3 spoilt papers) = 23.8% t'out)

This election was of interest due to the success of the Labour Party in gaining three seats. There was a notable increase in the number of local government electors following changes to the franchise, especially for women. The figures quoted are as in the editions of the Gazette dated 1 November and 25 October; those in the edition dated 8 November show some misprints. There were two vacancies in each ward. In the list of nominations in the 1 November edition, all 8 anti-Labour candidates are shown as "NCU & C". The designations below relate to those shown in the 8 November edition of the Gazette.
North-East ward (9,824 electors; 2,386 polled (including 4 spoilt papers) = 24.3% t'out)
H. Holsgrove (Lab) 1,331 P.E. Thomas (Lab) 1,259 W.S. Coleman (C) 1,054 C.H. Smith (C) 1,023
North-West ward (7,715 electors; 2,508 polled (including 4 spoilt papers) = 32.5% t'out)
W. Atkinson (C) 1,636 G.E. Dench (C) 1,595 S.W. Hobbs (Lab) 866 Mrs. F.M.A. Carlsson (Lab) 843
South-East ward (7,549 electors; 2,081 polled (including 4 spoilt papers) = 27.0% t'out)
The figures quoted are those after a second recount. Figures for the original count and the first recount, respectively, are shown within brackets)
A. Copping (C) 1,045 (1,068; 1,044) T.S. Atkins (Lab) 1,028 (1,047; 1,029) C.A. McLachlan (C) 1,014 (1,038; 1,013) J. Harris (Lab) 908 (923; 912)
South-West ward (8,097 electors; 1,612 polled (including 9 spoilt papers) = 19.9%)
C. O'Day (Lab) 1,258 A.R. Northcott (Lab) 1,221 F.C. Townsend (Ind) 336 R. Price (C) 326
Note: The Gazette states that Price was a former Labour councillor for the ward, although no record can be found of him for the period 1919-29. The Gazette also states: "He left the local Labour Party at the time of the split over Miss Mary Richardson's candidature, and afterwards joined the NCU. Mr Price is a prominent businessman [auctioneer and valuer] in the ward."

Acton 1934Before the 1934 election, the Middlesex Review Order 1934 simplified local government authorities and boundaries within the county, coming into force on 1 April. There were changes to the boundaries of Acton with the following neighbouring authorities: Brentford & Chiswick: Acton gained 34 acres, 620 population; lost 34 acres, 1,150 population. Ealing: Acton gained 15 acres and 58 population; lost 2 acres, 30 population. Willesden: Acton gained 1 acre, 0 population. The local press reported that some 805 local government electors were lost to neighbouring authorities with about 400 gained. The local paper (13 April 1934) said, with regard to the changes with Ealing, that they were of a 'give and take' nature in the Creffield Road and Hart Grove area so as to avoid properties being split between two authorities. For the changes with Chiswick, part or the whole of the following roads were lost: Chiswick High Road, Silver Crescent, Thorney Hedge Road, Mills Road and Mills Cottages. Acton gained one side of Bollo Lane (so as to unify the road in Acton), Ivy Crescent and the whole of Acton Green. The boundary change in the Bedford Park area was of a minor nature. A study of the 1935 Registers (source: AncestryLibrary.com) confirmed much of the above, but more specifically: North-East ward: No boundary change. Total entries in 1935 Register: 16,275 North-West ward: Retained 12,599 entries from the 1935 Register Lost polling district F(2) to Mount Park ward, Ealing (0 electors) Lost polling district GZ(2) to Grange ward, Ealing (26 electors in Brook House, Gunnersbury Lane) Lost polling district GZ(3) to Mount Park ward, Ealing (11 electors from Creffield Road and Oakley Avenue) Gained polling district CX from Mount Park ward, Ealing (7 electors in Queen's Drive and the Club House in Vale Lane) Gained polling district DX from Grange ward, Ealing (18 electors in Hart Grove) Final number of electors in redrawn ward = 12,599 + 7 + 18 = 12,624
South-East ward: Retained 9,753 entries from the 1935 RegisterLost polling district H(2) to Bedford Park ward, Brentford and Chiswick (0 electors) Lost polling district IX(2) to Gunnersbury ward, Brentford and Chiswick (653 electors in Acton Lane, Chiswick Road, Chiswick High Road, Silver Crescent, Thorney Hedge Road) Lost polling district JX(2) to Turnham Green ward, Brentford and Chiswick (74 electors in Acton Lane and Acton Green (Mills Row/Mills Cottges)) Gained polling district E(2) from Bedford Park ward, Brentford and Chiswick (0 electors) Gained polling district J from Turnham Green ward, Brentford and Chiswick (0 electors)

As well as the regular election for two members in each ward, there were two casual vacancies: in the North-West ward due to Cllr. H. Holmes being elected as an Alderman, and in South-East ward due to the resignation of Cllr. L.J.P. Brown. For the first time since Acton became a borough, these were not filled by separate election: instead the regular election was expanded and the person elected with the fewest number of votes deemed to have been elected to fill the casual vacancy.
With regard to the electorate figures quoted below: it should be noted that the figure for North-East ward - 11,764 - is the same as for the July 1935 by-election quoted in the post above. The new 1935 Register came into force on 15 October 1935 and it seems very unlikely that the electorate for the North-East ward would be the same in both the 1934 and 1935 Registers. Therefore, the electorates (and turnouts) in the local press and used below should be treated with scepticism.
North-East ward (2 vacancies; 11,764 electors; 3,890 voted (including 3 spoilt papers) = 33.1% t'out)

In addition to the standard two vacancies per ward, there was a casual vacancy for North-East ward, caused by the election of Cllr. W. Palmer as an Alderman. There had to be a recount in the North-East ward. The similarity of the surname of the successful Conservative candidate to that of the unsuccessful Labour candidate, together with a higher than usual number of spoilt ballot papers, was thought by the Gazette as having possibly caused confusion, thereby influencing the result so that just 1 vote separated them.
