1972
The last election was held on Thursday 4th May 1972, and Labour regained control, winning 7 wards from the Conservatives, to win 11 of the 19 seats. The Tories held 8 seats. It is amusing to see that an anti-immigration party led to the Tories losing seats - nothing changes! The composition of the council was Labour 41, Conservative 33, Liberals 2. 1971Labour swung back in Bradford to a position where they would be poised to take control of the council in 1972. Labour won 15 of the 19 seats, a gain of 12 seats from the Conservatives. The swing to Labour varied in different parts of the city, over 20% in Clayton but less than 6% in Thornton and in Manningham there was a small swing to the Conservatives. A recount was necessary in Idle, where Labour proved to be the main challenge to the Conservatives who held the seat, whilst the Liberals who won in 1970 dropped to third. The 13 anti-immigration candidates were in third place everywhere they stood. Council make up is now Conservative 48, Labour 26 and Liberal 2. AllertonElectorate | | 12,731 | |

1970Bradford took half a ace to the left with both Labour and Liberal parties doubling their, still small, council strength. Of the 21 vacant seats, the Conservatives won 12, Labour 8 and Liberals 1. Although there was a swing of up to 10% in some wards, the results make little more than a dent in the Conservative majority. Labour held it's formed seat in Tong and gained Bowling, one of two Bradford Moor seats, Laisterdyke, Little Horton, Manningham, University and Wyke. The Liberals gained Idle with a majority of 112 after a recount. Council composition is now Conservative 60, Labour 15 and Liberals 2. AllertonElectorate | | 12,807 |

1966Bradford had one of the lowest polls on record in this election, which left the Labour majority on the City Council unchanged. The net result was one Conservative gain at the expense off the Liberals. Labour won back East Bowling from the Conservatives, but lost Thornton to them after a recount. In North Bierley West the former Liberal seat was won by the Conservatives and the Liberals beaten into third place. The poll was only 34.61% with each party suffering from what was thought to be a surfeit of elections plus poor weather. In one polling district on a council estate, it is understood only 7% of the voters turned out. The highest percentage was the 49.07% in Thornton ward, where a recount was necessary, the lowest in Exchange ward where it was 24.31%. AllertonElectorate | | 13,169 |
